چکیده

A feedback-based model predictive control (MPC) approach to product quality improvement that incorporates multivariate statistical techniques has been developed [1]. The objective of the approach is to use existing process measurements to help reduce the variability of product quality when its online measurement is not feasible. The approach is model based and it uses principal component analysis to compress selected process measurements into scores. One or more manipulated setpoints are chosen and varied to control the scores in order to counteract the effect of stochastic process disturbances on product quality. The approach assumes that the selected process measurements correlate with product quality, and that the stochastic disturbances that cause product variability are stationary. When implemented on the Tennessee Eastman process the approach resulted in a 44% reduction in the variability of the product quality. In this paper the issue of how to handle non-stationary step upsets is addressed. A steady state model predictive control approach is used in conjunction with the dynamic score control to overcome the problems caused by the step disturbances. Copyright  2000 IFAC

Averaging level control in the presence of frequent inlet flow upsets

Buffer tanks are widely used within the process industry to prevent flow variations from being directly propagated throughout a plant. The capacity of the tank is used to smoothly transfer inlet flow upsets to the outlet. Ideally, the tank thus works as a low pass filter where the available tank capacity limits the achievable flow smoothing. For infrequently occurring upsets, where the system h...

Industrial Experience with State-Space Model Predictive Control

Experience with infinite-horizon state-space model predictive control confirms that the algorithm offers several advantages over the more conventional finite-horizon step-response based model predictive control algorithms, particularly in the specification of sample time and handling a wide range of process time constants. Examples illustrate our use of state space based model predictive contro...

Predictive Control of Nonlinear Process

Concept of model based predictive control (MBPC) has been heralded as one of the most significant control developments in recent ten years. Wide range of choice of model structures, prediction horizon, and optimization criteria allows the designer to easily tailor MBPC to its application in industry. The main idea of Model Predictive Control (MPC) is the prediction of the output signal at each ...

Performance Comparison of Predictive Controllers in Optimal and Stable Operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants

Any proper operation could be translated as a constrained optimization problem inside a WWTP, whose nonlinear behavior renders its control problems quite attractive for performance of multivariable optimization–based control technique algorithms, such as NMPC. The main advantage of this control technique lies in its ability to handle model nonlinearity as well as various types of constraints on...
